Населяє узбережжя водойм, гніздиться в норах схилами круч та в дуплах дерев. Живиться дрібною рибою й комахами. В Україні гніздовий, перелітний та рідкісний вид, що зимує.

Glossy ibis - a bird of the ibis family. One of the 3 species of the genus and the only species of the genus in the fauna of Ukraine. A nesting, migratory species in Ukraine. Migrant- will arrive in Ukraine in April. It settles in floodplains with thickets of reeds, meadows and forests, willow bushes. Nests in colonies together with herons and cormorants. It builds its nest on bent reeds or on trees or bushes. About 1.5-2 thousand pairs nest on the territory of Ukraine, the largest colonies are in the Danube Delta and on Sivash. The number of the species is reduced due to the withdrawal of water for irrigation, burning of reeds, construction of coastal strips, construction of fishponds in the place of forage biotopes, use of pesticides, increased disturbance factor during the breeding period and poaching.

Селиться в заплавах із заростями очерету, луками та лісами, чагарниками верболозу. Гніздиться колоніями разом із чаплями та бакланами. Гніздо будує на зігнутих очеретах або на деревах чи кущах. На території України гніздиться близько 1,5-2 тис. пар, найбільші колонії – у дельті Дунаю та на Сиваші. Чисельність виду скорочується внаслідок забору води для поливу, випалювання очерету, забудови прибережних смуг, облаштування рибницьких ставків на місці кормових біотопів, використання пестицидів, підвищеного фактора неспокою в період розмноження та браконьєрства.

Трапляється в лісистій місцевості. Тримаються на великих деревах, частіше невеликими групами по 5-6 птахів. Поводяться шумно, розкотисто ревуть і кудахкають. Найлегше їх спостерігати в польоті над лісом, оскільки вони не тільки відрізняються великими розмірами, але і виробляють багато шуму під час польоту. Рідше цих птахів можна побачити стрибучими з гілки на гілку серед листя. Гучні крики птиці-носорога нагадують гавкіт маленької собачки.
